Oh baby! Summer-like temps ruining ice

Check out this photo of Howey Bay in Red Lake, yesterday, taken by Red Lake Marine's Sherry McCoy.

All the snow has melted off the lake ice.

Then check out the snow cover layer on Windy.com website and app. It shows Red Lake and areas all the way west to Lake Winnipeg being barren of snow.

I'm moving my ice-out date back to May 8.

And if you are wondering where the snow-line is in North America, look at this clear view from NASA Worldview today.

Hey Dan,
Never thought I would say this since I wrote last week and pointed out the warm weather coming that way, but cold will be returning over the weekend. I'm still hoping I'm headed that way on 5/18 and flying north 100 miles from Red Lake on Friday 5/19. We need some sunny windy days but the forecast isn't cooperating over the coming weekend.

The optimist will note that while the forecast predicts below normal temps, there are only small accumulations of snow and even some rain. Daytime highs are above freezing and if the lake ice stays dark, it will absorb the sun rays and keep melting, at least a little, while we wait for warmer weather.

It's amazing how much snow got wiped out over the last few days! Thanks for the Windy suggestion - this website version is pretty incredible.
