Ontario has already declared a restricted fire zone, even before the snow has melted in much of the province. Normally such a restriction is made when the bush gets tinder dry and forest fire danger is extreme. This time, however, it has to do with Covid-19. The fire ban prevents revelers from standing around bonfires and breaking the social distancing law. Also this is no time to be fighting forest or grass fires started by careless campfires or burning debris.
Towns have also asked cottagers to stay home when the ice is off the lake, at least until the Covid flap calms down. They don't want new sources of the virus showing up and overwhelming the tiny health care institutions in these places.
Ain't Life Wild is a blog about the plants and animals of Northwestern Ontario, the environment, climate change and life in the world's largest ecosystem, the Boreal Forest.
