I got word late Wednesday that the ice disappeared in the Stretch, Red Lake's largest water body just west of Howey Bay. So that is ice-out!
That was followed by an update from the Town of Red Lake that Quibell Road Detour is temporarily closed. It may re-open tomorrow, May 19.
I will not give any other updates on road conditions because changes are happening so rapidly.
There are no ifs, ands or buts, get the Ontario 511 app. It has up-to-the minute road conditions, including accidents.

Looking forward to your next chapters in your book.
Thanks, Mike.
Hi Dan,
With the Quibell detour still closed, are you aware of any other routes to get to on to HWY105 to Red Lake? Much appreciated.
DJ,
I received a message from Red Lake Emergency Services saying to use Hwy 601 detour instead but I don't understand it. Hwy 601 is a loop road north of Dryden. My best advice is call someone in Red Lake, such as the air service if you are flying out to a camp, and see what they say.
DJ - the quibell detour is open to passenger traffic. We arrived in Red Lake today via the 647 (quibell) > 609 > 105.

Towed boats allowed to pass through detour?
I'm pretty sure it's OK to pull a boat. I think the reason for no tractor-trailers is they tear up the wet, gravel road more. I hear it is already a mess.
